Beekeeping and the production of Honey
Beekeeping can be labour-intensive during certain times of the year and the practice of apiculture requires a sound knowledge of the honey bees’ behavior. This session shall consist of a presentation by a local professional beekeeper, involving the various stages in the production of honey and related equipment. Themes within the presentation shall include:
– Different roles of bees within a colony. How do normal bees differ from the queen bee?
– Basic make-up of a hive and its function and life-cycle
– Why do bees sting?
– How do bees communicate?
– A Bee’s life cycle
The second part of the session will focus on the role of honey in history, culture and folklore, in particular its use to treat a variety of ailments. Participants will be given a taste of a traditional drink made with locally produced honey.
At the end of the session the participants will be given a certificate of attendance
At the Folklore Museum, Citadel, Gozo. For children aged 10 years and over. Maximum number of participants is 20.
