The Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy, in collaboration with the Department of Physics, Astronomical Society of Malta, Esplora and Heritage Malta, is organising an observation event for the total lunar eclipse occurring on Friday, 27th July, at Fort St Elmo, Valletta.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth eclipses the Sun from the Moon's perspective, casting the Moon in shadow. The Moon will start entering the Earth's umbra at 20:24hrs local time, commencing the partial eclipse phase. Eclipse totality commences just over an hour later, at 21:30hrs local time, with eclipse maximum at 22:21hrs .
Telescopes will be set up on site, although the eclipse itself shall be visible with the naked eye. We shall also be observing the planet Mars, which will be almost at opposition, at its closest to Earth since 2003.
Schedule : 8-11PM
Location : Fort Saint Elmo, Valletta
The event will be free, and everyone can attend!
