Homepage > Events > Spotting the Colourful Kingfisher with Falco

In August, as autumn approaches in Northern Europe, the first migrating birds begin their long journey towards Africa. Birdwatchers eagerly wait for this time of the year. So that’s why Birdlife are inviting young people to join our Falko team to spot the first migrants at the Ghadira Nature Reserve. The Reserve is not normally open in Summer, however Falko is giving the younger generation a special opportunity that shouldn’t be missed! One bird that the group will really be looking out for is the Kingfisher! This electric blue bird is difficult to see for most of the year. However in August there may be quite a few about. You’ll see them flying over the water quick as a flash. The group will also get the chance to see migrating waders on the day such as Dunlin and Little Stint. If you want to learn a bit more about how migrating birds are studied two licensed ringers will also be organizing a small ringing session. Birds aren’t the only creatures that the Ghadira wetland welcomes. The reserve will be full of colourful dragonflies and butterflies, and buzzing with life. It supports an important and fragile ecosystem. Finally, the group will cross over to the beach, cool off in the sea and end the day with a bbq!
