Din l-Art Helwa Gozo and Comino Volunteers announce a full day of activities at Santa Marija Tower on Comino on Saturday 22nd August being organized to mark the 50th Anniversary of the organisation that was founded in 1965 to protect and enhance Malta’s built and natural heritage.

The imposing watch tower, built in 1618 during the reign of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Din l-Art Helwa have teamed up with the Historical Re-enactment Group of Malta who will be present throughout the day to give the public a vivid experience of the life and times of the Tower Guards in the 18th Century.  The tower will be animated by re-enactors in period uniform who will deliver historical explanations to the visitors and put on garrison life displays both in and around the tower.

For the young history enthusiasts Din l-Art Helwa is staging treasure hunts throughout the day with lots of prizes to be discovered and won.  Original crafts made by local artisans using natural or recycled materials such as drift wood, sea glass, metal will be on display and Din l-Art Helwa volunteers will be in attendance all day to escort visitors around the site and offer information.  Admission is free of charge but donations towards the upkeep of the tower will be greatly appreciated.

The Santa Marija Tower Open Day by Din l-Art Helwa is being held on the same day as the Festa ta’ Kemmuna which is being organized by the Ghajnsielem Local Council and Silvio Vella. This is intended to revive the traditional feast of the Chapel of Santa Marija on Comino where Mass will be celebrated at 6 p.m.  by the Bishop of Gozo, followed by Band Marches and a Folk Evening.
