A brief explanation about the School System in Malta

School System in Malta

School System in Malta

According to Maltese law it is mandatory that all children attend school from the age of five years. Parents may choose to send their children to State or independent schools, or try to ensure a place within a Church school through the ballot system. Almost every town and village has a kindergarten (3 to 5 years) and a local primary school (5 to 10 years), where education is provided free of charge by the State. Schools are co-educational and are open from 8 am to 2.30pm in winter, and from 8 am to noon in June, though the latter may vary according to locality. The Foundation for Educational Services (FES) organises the summer school programme in most State primary schools. Lessons at these schools are taught in Maltese, apart from English lessons.

They are run by the Catholic Church and are partially State funded. Parents may pay a donation to the school. All donations go to finance additional supplementary members of staff, upgrading teaching equipment, maintenance and embellishment works. Children are admitted at different ages starting as early as three years (kinder 1 level) and may continue with their education even up to post-secondary level, although there are only two Church schools which cater at this level.

Parents have the option of paying for their children’s education from a choice of schools. Children start school at around the age of 4 or 5 up to 16 years of age. Lessons are held in English, except teaching Maltese. The majority of these schools have are co-educational.
